Memorial Day Parade - Ukiah, CA
May 26, 2014
What is Memorial Day about? Memorial Day is a Federal holiday honoring members of the United States Armed Forces who have died in war or while otherwise serving their country. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War, because the living would honor the dead by decorating their graves. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national or local cemeteries. The traditional time to visit cemeteries or war memorials is at 3:00 PM local time on Memorial Day. U.S. flags will be flown at half-mast until Noon. According to the US Government's website, you can also "Pay tribute to the U.S. men and women who died during military service by observing a minute of silence at 3:00 PM, local time." NOTE: Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.
